Refugees in Australia

And in Australian Care

 We pray on behalf of all persons seeking asylum from the Australian Government, whether on Bridging Visas out in the community, in indefinite detention in Australia or in any of the offshore detention centres.

We pray for mercy and compassion being shown to them by those they encounter.

We pray that no further trauma would be added to the trauma they already have experienced in having to leave loved ones, their homeland and all that symbolised security and identity.

We recognise that the Australian Government has adopted hard-line, deterring approaches towards further refugees coming to our shores, in response to a deep-seated and possibly media-driven and politically exploited fear in many of being overrun and economically depleted by needy asylum seekers. Such approaches and the consequent policies resulting from them have and still are further wounding a very fragile and vulnerable group, whose welfare nevertheless has now become our responsibility.

We pray for mature leaders, who are willing to include stakeholders providing care to refugees in the consultative process, as to how best to care for this people group.

May there be a turning from the present hard-line, punitive approach and may healing and inclusion into the fabric of our society be offered to refugees.

We pray that churches and church families throughout our country would find it in their hearts to make room for those who are hungry for acceptance, appreciation and inclusion, such as refugees and orphaned refugee children.
